CUSTOMS OF TISHA B’AV

In addition to the restrictions of the Three Weeks and Nine Days, on Tisha B’Av the following are also prohibited:

  1. Eating & Drinking.
  2. Washing
  3. Anointing. Rubbing on oil or perfume is prohibited, but deodorant is permitted,
  4. Leather Shoes.
  5. Marital Relations.

Additionally, until mid-day, we emulate mourners sitting Shiva, and only sit on the ground or low stools.  Again, emulating mourners we don’t greet people in the friendly manner we ordinarily would.  We don’t study Torah (with some exceptions), because Torah gladdens the heart.
